Dr. Frank Roach recently discussed the importance of at-home dental care while enduring the coronavirus pandemic.

At-home oral health has become more important than ever in 2020. COVID-19 case numbers are on the rise in many parts of the country, and that means hundreds of thousands of families will be going back into lockdown. In terms of dental care, this means many routine dental appointments have been missed.

“We see a lot of cavities among children,” Dr. Frank Roach said . “It’s the most common tooth issue that children face, and it’s often easily prevented.”

Dr. Frank Roach explained that cavities are especially detrimental because once the tooth decay starts, it becomes harder to stop. Dr. Frank Roach explained that tooth decay can also occur in babies and progressively worsen over time. He offered a few tips for kids and adults to preserve their dental health while on lockdown.

“Of course, we want everyone to brush their teeth twice a day for at least two full minutes,” Dr. Frank Roach said. “Check to be sure your toothpaste contains fluoride and drink fluoridated water throughout the day.”

Dr. Frank Roach encouraged fluoridated water over fruit juices, sodas, and other sugary drinks. He explained that the longer a person’s teeth are exposed to sugar, they have a higher risk of developing cavities. The consumption of any sugary foods or drinks should be followed by brushing of the teeth. Dr. Frank Roach also encourages everyone to floss once per day.

“Many people don’t know that toothbrushes can carry a lot of viruses, even if they are kept in a safe place,” Dr. Frank Roach said. “Viruses easily attach to the bristles, plastic, and other areas of the brush.”

Dr. Frank Roach said that now, more than ever, people should be soaking their toothbrushes in a combination of mouthwash and hydrogen peroxide. A full rinse under the faucet after will result in a clean toothbrush that’s better for your teeth and overall health. Dr. Frank Roach of Atlanta added that using an alcohol-free mouthwash or even saltwater twice daily can keep the mouth healthier. He warned that alcohol and anti-bacterial agents had been shown to negatively affect the immune system at times, so they should be avoided during the pandemic.

“The key is to eat and drink healthy, brush often, floss regularly, and focus on your overall oral health until you can make it back to the dentist,” Dr. Frank Roach said . “Be sure to check with your dentist to ensure they’re taking sanitary measures to prevent the passing of the virus before you make an appointment.
